What is Pipe Bursting?

Pipe bursting is a method of sewer pipe replacement. Just like traditional dig ups, pipe bursting places a brand new pipe in place of the damaged sewer line. However, with pipe bursting there is no costly and time consuming excavation of landscaping and concrete.

As an alternative to both traditional sewer replacement and epoxy pipe relining, pipe bursting is ideal and cost effective. It is also a fast option, usually completed within one or two days, depending on the length of sewer line being replaced.

Although it is called a trenchless sewer repair, pipe bursting does require some digging. Two small access points are needed for the entry and exit of the sewer line. This allows access for our state-of-the-art pipe bursting equipment to accurately install the new pipe.  

The new sewer line used in pipe bursting is a durable and flexible High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe. It is seamless, which guards against root intrusion and specially heated to make it strong and long lasting.

At the access entry point, our pipe bursting equipment will lower in a heavy duty steel cable affixed with a pipe bursting head into the opening. As it is fed through the old and damaged sewer line, the bursting head, operated with a pneumatic jack system, completely breaks apart the old pipe. As it demolishes the pipe, it creates space for the new HDPE pipe while pulling the new pipe through and into place of the sewer line.

The existing sewer line is left in the ground, so there is no need to remove pipe and place it in the local landfill.
