A small leak near the water meter is one of those things that's easy to brush off - until it isn't. We got called out to a home in Hacienda Heights where the water service PVC line had sprung a leak right at the meter. The ground was saturated, the meter box was flooded with muddy water, and the homeowner had no idea how long it had been going.
Here's the thing about leaks near the meter - they don't fix themselves, and they tend to get worse fast. Left alone, that slow seep can undermine soil, push your water bill up significantly, and eventually turn into a much more expensive repair. We've seen it play out that way plenty of times. Getting to it early is always the right call.
We dug down to expose the damaged section and pulled the old PVC fitting out. You can see the condition it was in - cracked joint, deteriorated fittings, the kind of wear that happens over time on older service lines. We replaced the failed section with new copper, properly connected and fitted at the meter side, so the repair is solid and built to last.
Copper at that connection point isn't just about durability. It handles ground movement and pressure variation better than PVC at the meter junction - which is exactly where you want a reliable material. Once everything was pressure-checked and confirmed tight, we backfilled and left the site clean.
If you've noticed soggy patches in your yard that don't dry out, or your water bill has crept up without any obvious reason, that's worth paying attention to. It could be a slow leak just like this one working away underground. Water service pipe issues are exactly what we do - from diagnosis to repair to full replacement when needed.
